When you read about churches, you often hear the word "member" or "membership." At first glance it's easy to mistake this as an exclusive term that implies "membership has its privileges." This term isn't about paying dues to be in God's Kingdom or joining a special club. It actually has ties to Scripture when the Bible speaks about the church.

Romans 12: 3-5
"For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others."

Just like a human body has members, the body of Christ has many members, each equipped with different gifts and purposes. Membership is committing to being one of the members God has provided to fill an important place in the church's life. This commitment is important to the body of Christ. Membership isn't about being more important, but is really a display of the humility of joining with others in the body of Christ to follow His will.

Register for the Class

At Hillside, we offer a membership class that covers everything from what it means to be a Christ follower, to baptism, to Hillside's mission, our core values, and what kinds of opportunities are available to exercise your membership. We meet for lunch on specific days at each campus, where our pastors share about their own walk with Christ and what it means to be a part of Hillside. The lunch is free and childcare is provided.
