Giving

Hillside is a generous community that is clinging to the truth that Jesus spoke when he said “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). This openness to give has brought a real atmosphere of love and grace to the church. There’s no way around it. We are called to give. It’s easy to become stingy or fearful and hold on to everything we can. But God calls us to give without regret and live life with our hands open to Him. We believe the Bible’s teaching on tithing and that it is God’s will for us to do so. We also believe tithing is merely the first step toward living a life of giving. We are called to be good caretakers of our wealth and be financially responsible, which is why we provide solid resources and coaching in this area for anyone at Hillside.

Contributions are solicited with the understanding that Hillside Christian Church has complete discretion and control over the use of all donated funds.

Gifts of Stock – A gift of stock can be one of the easiest ways to give. Gifts of appreciated stock are particularly wise from a tax perspective, since there are no capital gains paid, and the donor receives a tax deduction of the full face amount. For example, if you bought stock for $1,000 and now it is worth $5,000, you receive a tax deduction for the entire $5,000 without having a $4,000 capital gain. We can work directly with your broker or financial planner, and the process is very simple. In order for you to be receipted properly, please notify David Park what type of stock you are gifting and the number of shares.

Insurance & Retirement Proceeds – Hillside can be named as the beneficiary of insurance policies or retirement plans.

Memorial or Honorarium Gifts – If you would like to give a gift in memory of or in honor of someone, please provide the following information: Your name and address as the one giving the gift, the name of the recipient of the honorarium or memorial gift, and the name and address of the person or family to receive the notification of the honorarium or memorial gift. A card will be sent to the person or family designated to notify them of the gift. You will receive a receipt acknowledging your generous gift.

Matching Gifts – Matching Gifts is a creative way to have your gift matched by your employer, doubling the impact of your giving. Many companies make this available to their employees as a way to recognize the generosity of their staff. Since each company has its own process for matching gifts, we encourage you to contact your employer directly to see how to take advantage of this service. In most cases it is as simple as sending the matching gift form to the Stewardship Pastor so that we can verify that we have received your gift.

Gifts in Kind – The church has received numerous creative gifts such as surplus items, sale of grains, houses, land, apartments, vehicles, etc. Due to the nature of these gifts, they will only be accepted with approval of the Operations Director.

Remembering the Church in Your Will –Remembering the Church in your will is a convenient way to leave a lasting legacy. After you have provided for your loved ones, you can set aside a percentage of your estate to be given to Hillside. This can be done at the time you have your will made, or it can be added by a codicil (amendment to your existing will).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does your church believe about money?
God is our provider. He promises in Matthew 6:33 to provide for our needs. The Bible teaches that everything we have comes from God and belongs to Him. Psalm 24:1 says, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Therefore, we are mere stewards of what God has given to us. Tithing is giving back to God what is already His. We return 10% back to Him.
What is the difference between a tithe and an offering?
The word “tithe” means one tenth. So when you tithe, you give one tenth or 10% of your earnings. Tithing (10%) is the starting point of giving. Offerings are gifts given above the tithe. God has blessed some people financially who are able to give substantially more than 10% and still live comfortably.
Why should I give money to the church?
We recognize that Jesus talked more about giving than He did on any other subject. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Together, we work as a church to reach the lost. Malachi 3:10 says, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enoughto store it.” The storehouse today is the local church you are attending. By partnering our monies together, God’s work is done more effectively.
What are my giving dollars used for?
Your gifts are used to fund God’s work through the ministry the church. We do this through our weekend services for adults and kids, and through our support of local and world wide missionaries. We can accomplish more together than separate.
What if we believe we can’t afford to tithe right now?
The Lord requires us to be faithful regardless of how much He has entrusted to us. Luke 16:10 says “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” It is when we are having financial struggles that we can’t afford not to tithe. God wants us to trust Him in everything, including our finances. God asks us to tithe because through that, we become unselfish people and we show that we trust God to provide for our needs. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, it always requires faith. Trust God by giving to Him even when it seems impossible and allow Him to show you His provision for your life.
